Grandma Hoffman's Delicious
German Kuchen
4 cups flour
1 1/4 cup water
1 yeast
1/4 cup sugar
1 egg
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 cup shortening
- Soak yeast - 5 min in 1/2 c warm water
- Dissolve salt + sugar in 1 cup of the water
- Add 1/2 of the flour + mix well
- Add egg + beat well
- Add melted shortening + blend
- Add remaining flour + knead
- Raise 30 min & then cut into 4 pieces. Roll each piece to about 1/4" thick. Fit into pie plate.
- Put peaches or canned peaches (apples) over dough. (Better use larger pieces of fruit & sprinkle sugar, pour juice over well) (I dip slices of apple in sugar & cinnamon)
- Pour custard filling to cover fruit - Leave a crust edge! Sprinkle with sugar & cinnamon.
- Bake - 1 hour 350° till brown - 30 minutes
Custard Filling
4 egg - beaten
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup sweet cream
1/2 cup milk + Cook to thicken slightly before pouring over the fruit.
